Swindon Festival of Literature
Authors and speakers appearing will include Bob Wilson, the goalkeeper who played for Arsenal in their 1969 League Cup defeat by Swindon Town, actress Maureen Lipman and comedians Rory McGrath and Julian Clary, whose parents live in Swindon. If all goes to plan they will be joined by Cherie Blair, wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair, chat show host Michael Parkinson and Olympic champion Sebastian Coe. Other famous names in talks with festival organisers include comedienne Jo Brand, chef Gary Rhodes, political spin-doctor Alastair Campbell and poet Simon Armitage. During the festival there is also a Swindon performance poetry slam competition and a poems, pints and music evening. The 2009 Swindon Festival of Literature will be made possible by funding from Arts Council England, South West, Dominic Winter Book Auctions and Swindon Council's Culture Swindon and Artswords. The full-colour 32-page festival programme will be unveiled at Swindon's new £10m Central Library at midday on March 19.
