Bumblebee Identification and Survey Training
All 24 species of bumblebee in the UK are thought to be in decline. Bumblebees are struggling because of widespread loss of suitable habitat; they require wild flowers throughout the foraging season from which to obtain pollen and nectar. Bumblebees are also important pollinators for the majority of wild flowers that species-rich grasslands support.
The Trust is setting up fixed-route walks at three nature reserves to monitor bumblebee numbers and is looking for volunteers to help carry out surveying. This event is one in a series of three identification training days for volunteer surveyors. The course will be led by Dr Pippa Rayner, Conservation Officer for the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.
