Marine Alert - It's not too late

Marine Alert - It's not too late
It's not too late for our seas to fight back. All marine life, from tiny plankton to the great whales deserves our best efforts to help them survive. There is only one ocean; a worldwide continuous mass of water so big, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that one small act by one individual can make a huge difference to its recovery.
Three sad facts about our beautiful seas, shores and wildlife...
*Up to 75% of the world's fish stocks are now fished to their limit or over-fished and just 10 fish species account for three-quarters of all seafood sold in the UK.
*The UK currently only has 3.3km square of its seas totally protected from all forms of extractive activities (eg. fishing, dredging, dumping) - that's less than 0.002%. Marine biologists recommend at least 20-40% should be totally protected.
*Over 1,900 items of litter are collected on an average kilometre of the UK beaches - this rubbish eventually finds its way into the food chain.
Three things Marine Conservation Society (MCS) are doing to try and overcome these particular challenges...
*Working with the fishing industry, retailers and restaurants to promote sustainable fisheries through its Good Fish Guide and FISHonline website.
*Encouraging the protection of marine life and their habitats by campaigning for Marine Reserves: watch the MCS' award winning video and join the Marine Reserves Now campaign.
*Working with local communities and volunteers to clear UK seas and shores of litter and pollution through Beachwatch and the Good Beach Guide.
The End of the Line
Coming to UK cinema screens on June 8th (World Oceans Day), The End of the Line is based on the book of the same name by Charles Clover and is the world's first major documentary film about the devastating impact that over-fishing is having on our oceans.
The film dramatically exposes the impacts of fishing on marine life, the plight of species such as Bluefin tuna and the profound implications of a future world with no fish. But a key message from the film is that actions individuals can take will help bring change. The film is a wake up call to us all, reinforcing MCS's message that now is the time to act.
