Life in Wilts

Wiltshire has something special to offer everyone - from mythical Avebury, the largest henge monument in Europe, to the majestic Salisbury Cathedral, home to the tallest spire and the oldest working clock in Britain; the gardens of Stourhead replete with temples, lakes and a grotto; top designer brands housed in the largest undercover outlet centre in Europe and plenty of outdoor activities including rambling through chalklands along a plethora of footpaths; exploring the ancient forest of Savernake; feeling the adrenalin rush of high-speed car and motorcycle racing at Castle Combe or taking a leisurely cruise down the Kennet and Avon Canal - to mention a few.
This inspirational environment is also the birth place of celebrities from pop singer and actress Billie Piper (Swindon), who became the youngest artist ever to debut at number one in the UK singles chart and Captain James Blunt (Tidworth) who swopped his military career for international stardom following several chart-topping hits, to Sir Christopher Wren (East Knoyle), renowned scientist, mathematician and architect of St Paul's Cathedral; zoologist and acclaimed author Desmond Morris (Swindon) whose controversial book The Naked Ape revealed a whole new perspective on anthropology and Sir Isaac Pitman (Trowbridge) the inventor of shorthand!
It's not surprising that the term 'chalk and cheese' originated in Wiltshire and it is no wonder that visitors from around the world flock to this diverse county to discover its wealth of historical treasures and absorb its wonderful scenery. For those of us privileged enough to live here, Wiltshire provides an exceptional quality of life, offering a broad array of cultural experiences through a multitude of monuments, museums and festivals as well as the opportunity to engage in a broad range of activities that nurture both body and soul.
