Unravelling Wiltshire's Past

The Wiltshire Heritage Museum in Devizes is truly a treasure trove. Founded in 1853, the museum houses some of the finest collections in Britain covering the archaeology, recent history, natural history and art of Wiltshire. It's an ideal place to trace Wiltshire's history, with a series of galleries to guide you through the ages: Neolithic, Bronze, Iron, Roman, Saxon and Medieval.

There's also an excellent library that is brimming with unique and rare material from the 1628 illuminated copy of the Devizes charters to seventeenth-century Civil War pamphlets, manuscripts and original Fox-Talbot negatives and photographs. Indexed local newspaper cuttings dating back to the early 18th century and examples of approximately 75% of Wiltshire's maps published before 1885 are sure to delight budding local historians.

Friendly, helpful staff are on hand to share their expertise with visitors that include families, researchers and students. Genealogists will find a wide-ranging collection of pedigrees, family histories and parish records and if you're keen on finding out more about your house or village, there is a fascinating collection of sale catalogues featuring properties throughout the county, many dating back to the 18th century.

The museum continues to add to its collections and provides a valuable service identifying and recording artefacts recovered by both professionals and members of the public. It also hosts numerous activities including lectures, outings, family days and children's holiday activities.

Both the museum and library are owned and operated by the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society (WANHS), a registered charity. The Society has dedicated itself to preserving the rich archaeological and historical treasures and records of Wiltshire, including the World Heritage Sites of Avebury and Stonehenge. It aims to 'foster interest in the areas covered by the collection, and to explore, research and publish information on these subjects for the education and benefit of the public'. Membership of the Society is open to anyone with an interest in these subjects.
