A Fitness Centre With a Difference

Fitness Centres are invariably synonymous with toil, sweat, raucous music, grunting and muscle flexing. Fine, if that's what you're after. But what about those of us who want somewhere that makes exercising fun, where you can truly relax in the knowledge that you're accepted for who you are, not how you look? A place where it doesn't matter whether you're fat, thin, athletic or have limited ability. Where you don't feel intimidated or self-conscious.

Fitness guru and sports injury therapist Annemarie Botha-Jones has made this unlikely scenario a reality. Since opening its doors in October 2008, Jagz Fitness has attracted an ever-growing clientele due to its unpretentious approach and superb service.

The centre is the UK's largest single Power Plate gym and was created to cater for mixed ability groups, allowing them to share exercise classes and socialise in a homely atmosphere with state-of-the-art equipment and highly trained instructors.

"There are plenty of places that cater for elitism," says Botha-Jones. "I wanted to create a place where people of all groups, ages and capabilities could get together and really enjoy themselves in a relaxed environment. Our goal is to stimulate self-confidence, to motivate people and to promote mental and physical wellbeing."

A wide variety of classes are scheduled throughout the week, offering the flexibility to appeal to a diverse audience - from teenagers to pensioners, fitness fanatics, the disabled and people undergoing rehabilitation. With ten Power Plates, there's no waiting around and plenty of helpful instructors on hand to offer advice.

The beauty of a Power Plate workout is that it's extremely safe and highly effective. Designed by NASA to accelerate the re-building of muscle mass for returning astronauts, the technology has gained favour with professional athletes and world champions. It has also proved to be highly effective in rehabilitation and sports therapy.

Based on a vibrating plate that accelerates training by intensifying muscle contractions, the technology provides a concentrated workout in just 30 minutes. This is the maximum amount of time recommended for any accelerated training and it can be combined with off-plate training.

In addition to Power Plates, Jagz Fitness offers pilates, yoga and tai chi classes, as well as cardiovascular and stability training through its spinning bikes, treadmill, gymstick and weight lifting equipment. Once the warmer spring weather has set in there will also be power walking groups.

"It's important to offer a variety of activities and we are constantly thinking up alternative and interesting ways to keep fit. This keeps motivation levels up and prevents people from getting bored," she adds.

In keeping with its friendly, approachable style, Jagz Fitness does not force people to commit to lengthy contracts. They offer a free induction and pay-per-class or monthly memberships. Once a member, you're given free nutritional advice, a measuring service to monitor progress and access to experienced instructors at all times. If you do start to feel unmotivated, there are understanding and compassionate people to talk to and get you back on track.

"We work hard to put the personal touch back into training and I believe it shows in our friendly, professional staff and the intimate atmosphere we've created," Botha-Jones says.
