1) Wiltshire is largely agricultural, spanning an area of 3,480 sq km. It has a population of 435,000.
2) There are 176,655 households in Wiltshire (excluding those in Swindon Borough) of which 72% are privately owned.
3) It's the second safest place in England, according to national crime figures.
4) The High Street in Marlborough is reputedly one of the widest streets in Britain.
5) Malmesbury is the oldest borough in England, with a history stretching over 1000 years.
6) Wiltshire has 50% of the United Kingdom's calcareous grassland resource, and thus is of international importance for chalk grassland.
7) William Fox Talbot took the world's first ever photograph at Lacock Abbey in 1835.
8) Longleat is home to the world's longest hedge maze, comprised of over 16000 English yews.
9) In Wiltshire speak, a billy button means a dimwit, a butty is a workmate and to flump means to fall heavily.
10) The acclaimed English novelist EM Forster pays his respects to Wiltshire in his novel The Longest Journey: 'Here is the heart of our island: the Chilterns, the North Downs, the South Downs radiate hence.
